Um das Vista Codec Package zu nutzen, muss der PC über ein Videoprogramm wie Windows Media Player, QuickTime Player oder andere DVD-Software verfügen. Vista Codec Package installiert die Codecs automatisch an die richtige Stelle. Anschließend spielt jede beliebige Mediasoftware Videos unter anderem im QuickTime-, Realmedia-, AVI-, MPEG- oder WMV-Format ab.
